Seller: transportationemporium (1,586) 100%, Location: Reading, Pennsylvania, Ships to: Free Local Pickup, Item: 121425352491 This majestic wooden room divider was removed from a Baba Nyonya house in Malacca, Malaysia circa late 1800s / early 1900s. Typical of a wealthy Baba Nyonya house, the front room was the formal sitting room (entrance hall) for guests. A room divider such as this was used to separate the sitting room from the family quarters and consisted of an intricately carved and painted wooden screen that provided both privacy and ventilation. The homes were built narrow but deep to avoid high taxation (the wider the house – the higher the tax). So this divider would have spanned the entire width of the house. It measures 14 ½ feet wide by 12 ½ feet high (there is ‘flexibility’ in the height from approximately 11 ½ to 12 ½ feet). There is an open doorway in both the left and right sides of the divider with a four-panel doorway in the middle, each of which can be opened. The original finish and gold leaf is in very good condition. The Baba (masculine) and Nyonya (feminine) are Chinese descendants who adopted Malay culture. They are also known as Malacca (Malaysia) Straits-born Chinese or Pernakans, and practice both Chinese and Malay customs. They are known for their unique furniture, dress style, and food, forging a marriage of Chinese and Malay culture. This artistic room divider is a classic example of this cultural fusion. This panel would make a fabulous and unique centerpiece for a custom built home, art gallery, restaurant, office, commercial building or museum. Our family lived in Malaysia for 14 years and brought this divider with us when we returned to the States several years ago. The room divider was professionally packed and shipped and has not been removed from the 16 custom built boxes. A detailed plan was created before disassembly of the divider and is included for easy reassembly. The photographs of the assembled divider show the carving, artwork and design and provide a perspective on the size and grandeur of this piece. These photos were taken in Malaysia when the divider was disassembled for transport to the USA. Shipping arrangements are the full responsibility of the buyer. Delivery possible by seller within an 8 hour drive of Reading, PA 19601 at agreed upon rate, including to port of New York / New Jersey shipping agents.
