Seller: tjtoolie (4,456) 100%, Location: Royersford, Pennsylvania, Ships to: US, Item: 282727983699 From my Medical Collection: Here we have an Antique Ebony Handled Surgeon's Amputation Bone Saw by H. SIMPSON, c 1850's. George Maw, from Lincolnshire, in 1807 started a partnership with his wife’s cousin Hornby in Fenchurch Street. In 1814, he set up for himself by purchasing the business of a surgical instrument maker in Whitecross Street. In 1825, he moved the business to 56 Aldersgate Street where his sons John Hornby and Solomon joined him. Solomon brought in his son Charles in 1860 and the business became S. Maw and Son. The company operated primarily from 1807 – 1901 before being taken over by a large international supplier. The saw spline is marked: MAW LONDON and therefore, based upon the above history, would date this instrument to pre-1860 ! This Steel AMPUTATION Saw is called a 'Capital saw' and was manufactured in the "pre-sterilization era" when medical instruments still had handles made of ebony, rosewood or bone. This is a 'pistol-handled' saw. The Mahogany wood handle is in good condition with no cracks and is held to the blade with two Brass 'split-nut' saw nuts. All of the metal parts of the saw are in good condition with some areas on the blade showing light discoloration from corrosion. There is a very short crack in the saw tip where it meets the edge of the steel spline (see pics.). Other than hospitals these saws were usually found included in 'Capital' Surgical Sets, which had a large compliment of instruments and used in the very rear area of a battle region or in a hospital (large fine mahogany crafted cases with specific spaces for each instrument). This is a Maker identified saw that will help you complete your Capital Set or complete your MAW collection !! Saw is 14" long. 'Apologies' - crack at front edge of saw. ** Please remember to leave Feedback. I will gladly reciprocate. :-) Reg. Box A Condition: Good 'used instrument' condition. Crack at tip of blade., Maker: MAW, London
