Edo period shibuichi tsuba of high quality signed Yoshihide, depicting Gama Sennin with his toad on his shoulder.
Gama Sennin was a wise man who learnt the secret of immortality from the three legged money toad. He is often depicted with the toad sitting on his shoulder. The story comes from a Chinese fable which associates the toad with good luck.
Yoshihide (personal name Suzuki Kinyemon) worked in Yedo in the first half of the 19th century. He also used the name Kwanji. He was a pupil of Iwamoto Konkwan, by whom he was allowed to use the Iwamoto family name.
Shibuichi is a silver and copper alloy which is patinated in different colours ranging from dark grey to a soft silver grey. This tsuba is in the silver grey form.
