Seller: cargotea (1,111) 100%, Location: Bellingham, Washington, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 142937359479 Antique, Japanese, Kutani, Yoshidaua, Teapot and CupsLate Meiji Period (circa 1868 to 1912) Formal Japanese Tea (Chanoyu) Ceremony Set* * * * *Up for bid, is a Japanese, Kutani, Teapot and Cups, with a Green Style Yoshidaua Motif; Antique (circa, Late Meiji Period) used for the Formal Japanese Tea (Chanoyu) Ceremony; (Matcha (caffeinated) would typically be used but sencha (decaffeinated) can be used. * * * * *The wooden stand, shown in some pictures, is not included in this sale. Only the Teapot and Cups. * * * * * When I was a member of the Japanese Tea Society, members often brought in examples, of their tea wares and accouterments. What I noted, was that the Cups and Teapots, rarely matched; so, I assume that having matching Cups and the Teapot, is actually quite rare. This appears to be especially true, in regard to antique wares, from the Edo and Meiji Periods. I have looked, in the past, for matching Cups and Teapot and typically they are owned by museums or private collectors asking a huge price.* * * * *This Teapot is 'hand made' on a Potter's Wheel. The Potter's marks (concentric circles) can be clearly seen on the lower half of the Teapot on the outside. It is made of a very heavy (brown) clay or earthen ware. The Teapot and Cups, in the traditional Tea Ceremony, are suppose to be 'rustic' and 'humble' to instill a since of 'calming peace' (it is not an ego-based ceremony). Therefore, the selection of the heavy brown clay, would be considered to be ideal for the Teapot and Cups used in the more formal Japanese Tea Ceremony.* * * * *A thin porcelain slip, covers the Teapot and Cups. This served a duel-purpose. First, to give a smooth surface, to facilitate the process of applying a design/motif (it's hard to create a beautiful design on a rough). Second, the Teapot and Cups, are suppose to reflect 'humble origins' and reinforces the 'rustic' theme. This is because, the concentric circles and heavy weight, suggest a less refined ware.* * * * *The green and blue enamel glazes, are diluted and translucent, almost like 'water colors'. But, they are brushed on, in a manner suggesting a quick and free-style, reinforcing the 'rustic' and of 'humble origins' theme. The Red enamel, is a cooper derived glaze, developed in the late 18th century (later, red enamel glazes, were 'iron' based and developed in the19thcentury).* * * * *The bottom of the Teapot, has a Hallmark, in 'running script'. From what I understand, very few Japanese people can read this type of script today. Even less, can actually write, in Japanese running script. The last time, running script was in common use, was during the early Edo Period (1603 to 1868). * * * * *ConditionCondition is excellent; there does not appear to be any chippings, cracks or other damage. The original handle on the Teapot, was an old wore out, woven bamboo handle, and was broken in several places due to age and common wear. So, a replacement bamboo handle, is currently serving in it's place.* * * * * There were other Cups, at one time, but they were pinched by a guest many years ago.* * * * *Please, review all of the pictures provided, to confirm this assessment of condition.* * * * *All measurements are approximateDiameter (Teapot) = 5.5 inches (13.9 cm)Maximum Width (Teapot) = 8.5 inches (21.6 cm)Diameter (Cups) = 3.25 inches (8.2 cm) Height (Teapot with lid) = 7.5 inches (19 cm)Height (Teapot without lid) = 5 inches (12.7 cm)Height (Cup) = 2.75 inches (7 cm)Weight (Teapot) = 28 ounces (794 grams)Weight (Cup) = 6.6 ounces (187 grams)Fluid Capacity = 40 ounces = (1.1 kilos)* * * * * I accept PayPal (only) as a method of Payment. * * * * * All Shipping is calculated by eBay based upon current postal rates of the United States Postal Service (USPS); a tracking number is provided, free of charge, on all items shipped and sold.
