Antique Howes Foundry Cast Iron OWL Fireplace Tongs Log Grabber Tool Early 1900s
This is a gorgeous antique cast iron fireplace log grabber or tongs made by the Howes Foundry of Boston circa early 1900s in the good old USA. These tongs are part of a larger set marked with 651-1. The handle is topped with a detailed cast owl figure. The piece is very durable and in great pre-owned vintage condition. Approximate size of the entire tool is 27" long x 3.5" wide. Just the owl figure, which is a full figure, not just a flat image measures about 4.5" tall x 1.5" wide (with circumference when taking a tape measure and measuring all the way around of 3.25"). The piece w eighs slightly under 2 lbs 12 oz.
This piece is in great pre-owned vintage condition with no signs of damage or excessive wear. There is patina on the piece that highlights the age without looking damaged. Patina gives the piece a nice aged dark brown with black in some places. There is no warping, breaks, cracks, or other structural issues with the tongs or the decorative owl handle. This is a great addition to any set, especially one that is not quite as decorative to give some additional style and age to the whole set.
