Ca. ?? Tag reads: Jacobus Stainer in Absam prope Oenipontum 16 The Figural Scroll alone makes this Piece Stand out! This Beauty will impress anyone that sees it with the fantastic Lion's Head Scroll. This violin could be a real diamond in the rough for the right person. This is a Wonderful looking Violin that has seen it's share of rough times. It was found with an older violin in storage in NewYork. This piece is currently in need of a bit of cosmetic restoration as the finish is quite worn. Sadly this violin / fiddle has lost it's case years ago and is in need of a new one. The Scroll and the Peg box alone are worth the effort as they display very nicely as they sit. Other than the finish there is a stress fracture on the bottom belly to the right of the tailpiece and a worn spot along the ribs just above the right beak and the nut is loose. This Piece Also comes with a bow. Information on Jacob Stainer (c. 1617-1683) The Earliest and best known Austrian Luthier. Stainer was born in Absam, Austria. His designs influenced instrument construction in Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, parts of Italy, and several other countries. He may have been associated with the luthiers of Cremona, Italy, in particular the Amati family. His instruments were the most sought-after throughout Europe until the late 18th century, when changing performance conditions led musicians to seek a different sound. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I could be wrong but I am not 100% certain that this violin was actually made by Stainer as the tag does not say fecit Cremone or "made this in Cremone". Either way this looks to be an older violin that is at the very least in the school of Jacobus Stainer. This Piece Display's Very Well. This Piece was found in storage in New York. 23 1/4" Tall (top of scroll to end button) 8 1/4" Across (back) 2 1/2" Deep ~ * ~ ~ We are Listing Some Great Items This Week ~ Early Pieces including Paintings from two Estates Antique Lighting, Paintings & MORE!
