From my Medical Collection:  Here we have an Antique Ebony Handled Surgeon's Amputation Bone Saw by H. SIMPSON, c 1850's.    Henry Simpson was a surgical instrument maker in London, England and operated his firm at 55 Stand St. from approx. 1850 - 1863.  He manufactured all types of instruments such as those for amputating, trepanning, cupping, operating, pocket, teeth, dissecting, post-mortem, eye instruments, etc.  and also supplied complete surgical kits. The saw spline is stamped SIMPSON.    This Steel AMPUTATION Saw is called a 'Capital saw' and was manufactured in the "pre-sterilization era" when medical instruments still had handles made of ebony, rosewood or bone.  This is a 'pistol-handled' saw.  The handle is in good condition with the exception of a short stable crack in the handle at the top screw.  The handle is tight on the blade. This was a high end saw in that Spline appears to be made of German silver or nickel.  All of the metal parts of the saw are in very good condition with some areas on the blade showing light discoloration from corrosion.      Other than hospitals these saws were usually found included in 'Capital' Surgical Sets, which had a large compliment of instruments and used in the very rear area of a battle region or in a hospital (large fine mahogany crafted cases with specific spaces for each instrument).  This is a Maker identified saw that will help you complete your Capital Set or complete your SIMPSON collection !!  Saw is 15-3/8" long. 'Apologies' -  crack at top screw ** Please remember to leave Feedback.  I will gladly reciprocate.  :-)
