Seller: redatmsoe (143) 100%, Location: Folsom, California, Ships to: Free Local Pickup, Item: 292437226135 This antique desk was sold at auction in the 1980’s by the Gilroy, California Train Depot. It’s most likely that this desk held a few cloves of garlic for that is what Gilroy is famous for. The Gilroy train station has served as the last stop on the Peninsula Commuter Rail line with service to and from San Francisco and was operated by Southern Pacific Railroad. The Peninsula Commuter Rail line has a rich history dating back more than 150 years. Today this line is known as Caltrain. This convertible desk was used by Gilroy Station Train Master. In the upper left hand corner there are ink stains from where the passenger's tickets were stamped. Only one can image all people who has seen touched or used this desk at one point in time or another oh the stories it could tell. When the trains were running late, the station master would unfold the Murphy bed on the back of this desk so he could rest while he waited for the arrival of the next train. We believe this desk was made in the late 1890's due to its Victorian Eastlake furniture style and features. When we first moved to California my husband worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a conductor. We hope to find someone who will appreciate the nostalgic value of this very unique piece of furniture.
