Traditionally a young woman and her suitor would visit in a sitting room until the candle burned down to the top of the first iron coil. Once there it was a firm indicator that it was time for the suitor to leave. If the father approved of the suitor he could adjust the candle's height giving the young couple more time together. The Candle Holders were typically made by a blacksmith and had a built in support that allowed the candle to be raised or lowered. Families of all economic backgrounds used this method of "supervised" dating which taught daughters to respect her parents' judgment and suitors to defer to the daughter's parents' rules. Today they may not hold the same significance but remain an attractive piece of our social historical fabric. This Courting Candle is made on wrought iron on a wooden base with a green felted bottom. It stands approximately 9 inches tall by 2 3/4 inches wide. It could be given as a wedding gift or kept as an artifact for your own personal historical collection. Type: Candles
