Antique Chinese Jade Carved 'Boy Riding a Water Buffalo', Late Qing Dynasty. Description: An exquisite Qing Dynasty Green Jadestone Sculpture, hand-carved in traditional Chinese taste, depicting a young Imperial child riding the back of a water buffalo meandering the river banks, with waves washing ashore under the oxens chin. Comfortably seated, the boys head is tilted back with joyful expression, wearing an imperial style robe, holding a rope with his right hand, while supporting himself with the left. The buffalo motions with his powerful stride on four legs, looking straight ahead, with two horns boldly curved back towards the rider, The ox is intricately rendered with strong muscular posture, fur hide incised, eyes bulging in emotion, the mouth open, tongue visible, exaggerated hooves, and long swaging tail. All natural patina, smooth surface stained with finely ground 'Cinnabar', an oil-based paste, used in early Chinese art. As in Chinese literature and art history during the Ming and Qing dynasty, the picturesque scene of a "little boy riding on the buffalo" is a favorite motif, intended to give aesthetic pleasure to the beholder, and as an expression of good wishes, concerning the recipient's longevity, and to transmit a hidden message to him, albeit in graphic form - to show the juxtaposition of a young valnerable child and physically powerful animal, were to symbolize the docile nature of the buffalo and ease with which they can be made obedient, even by a child. Important to agriculture, the water buffalo or ox symbolizes springtime, harvest and fertility, representing a simple and idyllic life.
