This is a form of scrimshaw work where black lacquer is flowed into the engraved designs. It opens like a book and inside are four pages of finely woven wool to hold the needles. Green silk ribbons trim the back spine and tie in a bow to hold it closed. The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or loss and everything looks to be original. It measures 2 1/8" by 1 3/8" closed (not counting the ribbons). It's English and dates to the early 19th century. A variety of Madras work needlework tools in this material are shown on p. 87 of Nerylla Taunton's book Antique Needlework Tools. *This item is made of bone from a domestic cow (bovine) and not from an endangered species I stand behind everything that I offer and guarantee that it is exactly as presented. ** Full Insurance is included in the low shipping price for all of my auctions. ** I accept payment through PayPal, eBay or a check.
