Antique Laughlin Art China Monk Beer Tankard Pitcher with 6 Beer Mugs. RARE COMPLETE SET! Antique Laughlin Art China Monk Beer Tankard Pitcher with 6 Beer Steins / Mugs A rare complete set of the original 1907 Antique Homer Laughlin Art China Specialties Monk Stein Ewer and Six Stein Mugs with the monk subjects as decals in a tinted dark brown over a white body glaze. In the early 1900s, many American pottery companies started to produce decorated specialties. The "specialties" were made up of shapes that didn't belong to any particular dinnerware line, and were intended to be more decorative with fancy and ornamental styling. Most of the treatments consisted of colorful decals with blended tints. All of this was done in response to the wares being imported from Bavaria and other parts of Europe as well as products produced by domestic firms such as Rookwood and Roseville. Art china was also made in the United States by Brunt, Smith-Phillips, Warwick, Taylor, Smith & Taylor, National China, Owen China, and many others. The Homer Laughlin China Company started their line of Art China in 1902 under the direction of Arthur Mountford. The special "Laughlin Art China" gold marking was applied over the glaze and wasn't always used. It appears mainly on Currant, White Pets, Monks, Gypsy, Juno, Laughlin Blue, Ruby, as well as several other patterns. Pattern: Monks - monk subjects, tinted dark brown, no gold This set includes the Friar Monk Beer tankard pitcher with 6 beer stein mugs with stag horn handles. Ceramic pitcher is glazed in a brown gradient and features an image of a German friar/monk. Holds approximately 78 oz of liquid. Measures approximately 12-1/2" tall, 4-3/4" diameter at top and 6-1/4" diameter at base and approximately 8" wide with handle. The stein mugs measure 3" in diameter at top, 4" in diameter at base, 5-1/2" wide with handles and 4-3/4" tall. They hold approximately 14oz of liquid. Condition: Overall the complete set is in very good antique preowned condition. This set displays beautifully. Typical imperfections and wear marks from these over 100 year old pieces including under the glaze crazing, chips, and cracks - the display portion of the pieces are in excellent shape for age. Pitcher has a hairline crack on the lip of the spout that likely broke off and was repaired - it is a very old repair so has been stable and kept well over decades. All of the mugs have at least one chip on the stag horn part of the handle and one of the mugs has a hairline crack that appears to have gone all the way through and then repaired. Pieces have other factory production imperfections such as sand bumps, mold flaws, glaze skips, glaze pops, etc - common factory production issues for antique pottery. All pieces are marked on bottom with Laughlin Art china with the eagle. Some wear on decals on pitcher and stein mugs from handling and use. All condition remarks noted for accuracy. Beautiful rare set! See all pictures. See photos for details Ships via USPS
