The top shelf of the mantle has a separation in the middle. where it was carefully cut and joined together mnay years ago to fit the space where it was in my parent's family home for over 50 Years. It has been stored for quite some time and has not been cleaned. A poultice or polishing would bring out all the natural brilliance. The exact date of the mantle is hard to pin point-- it could have been made prior to the civil war or imported for a southern residence. This is a spectacular Victorian marble mantel. The carving is very deep and pronounced. Outstanding Center keystone . Provenance: The mantle was removed from an old mansion and acquired by my father many years ago. A 1963 newspaper article about my fathers Antique collecting states:"The mantle was only one of this collector's aquisitions. In depths of the Great Depression when the decorative features of razed residences might be had for a song, this collector did a lot of singing! This mantle, one of his acquisitions, in any event was incorporated in his own home. The owner was an early collector of fine antiques in the `1920's-1970's- He owned many old homes and as they were torn down --he managed to salvage much of the fencing , marble mantles, brass door knobs..etc...." Mantels of this type were popular with upscale 19th Century Architects and were used to grace the mansions they built during the last half of the Century.
