Seller: wear-the-past (2,024) 99.7%, Location: Salisbury, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 371787647023 This is an ancient Romano-Celtic Heliotrope intaglio, dating to the 3rd century A.D. It is cut with an image of farmer, sewing seed into a ploughed furrow. He holds an ard in one hand, whilst broadcasting seed in the other. He is dressed in a long cloak and wide brimmed hat. The dark green colour of the intaglio is connected with fertility, growing crops and life. The use of a Heliotrope (Bloodstone) also has connections with Helios (god of the Sun). Sadly the intaglio has surface chips, though is still a nice piece of miniature Romano-Celtic art. Originally set into an iron signet ring, this intaglio would have acted as a personal seal for documents and letters. Today it is suited for remounting into a gold signet ring.OBJECT: IntaglioCULTURE: Romano CelticDATE: c. 3rd century A.D.MATERIAL: HeliotropeSIZE: 12.73mm x 8.86mm x 2.75mmWEIGHT: 0.6 gramsThis item is guaranteed authentic and dates to the period described.
