Seller: wear-the-past (2,024) 99.7%, Location: Salisbury, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 371786218079 This is an ancient Roman carnelian intaglio, dating to the 2nd - 3rd century A.D. It depicts a magical creature, alert and looking over it's back, wearing what appears to be a petasos (so possibly the head of Mercury). The body appears to be that of a hare, or deer. These magical gems were highly sought after during the medieval period, to be reset in seals by the Templar's. This example would combine the attributes of Mercury with the attributes of a deer or hare (both very fast). Originally worn in a gold or silver finger ring to act as a signature for documents and letters. It is possible this gem once belonged to a dispatch rider, who's duty to deliver mail fast and safely (hence the attributes that would convey their power to the wearer). This ancient gem is suitable to be reset into a gold finger ring today, or added to your collection.OBJECT: Intaglio gemCULTURE: RomanDATE: c. 2nd - 3rd century A.D.MATERIAL: Carnelian gemstoneSIZE: 10.5mm x 9mm x 3mmWEIGHT: 0.7gThis item is guaranteed authentic and dates to the period described.
