Seller: clioantiquities (151) 100%, Location: Wilmington, North Carolina, Ships to: US, Item: 132017694643 CULTURE/REGION OF ORIGIN: Late Roman Syria or Palestine DATE: Circa 400 AD DIMENSIONS: 9.7 cm (3.82 in.) long DESCRIPTION: This late Roman pottery oil lamp is formed of buff to pink clay and has a high squared handle decorated with vertical lines inside a square, while the area around the fill hole is decorated with short strokes radiating from a circle around the hole. The slightly raised circular base is plain. Intact, with soot at the wick hole from use and a thin layer of sandy encrustation all over. A good example of a type that was widespread in the broader Syria / Palestine / Levant region during the late Roman period. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Colorado private collection, assembled by a United Nations staffer while working in the Middle East in the mid-1960s, thence by descent to the most recent owner.
