The gem depicts a masked-animal also termed as grylloi, used to describe strange creatures, often a mixture of a human head with an animal or various parts of animal bodies, or consisting of joined human and Silenus faces/masks with body parts of various animals (see here). This example bears the bearded head of Silenus, on the body of a rooster with a bridled horses head, behind which is a cornucopia (horn of plenty). These gems were used mostly for their apotropaic function as protective amulets, set into gold and silver signet ring. The grylloi device protecting the sealed contents of the document or letters. The gem is cut on a deep red heliotrope (bloodstone) with small patches or green (reverse of most heliotrope gems which are dark green with inclusions of red). Most ancient and magic gems including Abraxas are found on heliotrope, though to imbue the intaglio with further powers.This ancient intaglio has survived in good excavated condition, it has a chip but this doesn't effect the design.
