The terminal is in the form of a bull's head and the details are remarkable for such a small piece; the tufts of hair on his forehead and top of head, folds of skin on the nose and under the eyes as well as the ears are all delicately modelled in gold.The earring is formed of four strands of twisted gold wire, two of which are twisted filigree wire and the other being plain twisted wire. The hollow bull head terminal has chased decoration as well as applied coiled and filigree wire. A circular loop below for attachment.Earrings such as this are believed to be of Cypriot manufacture. A very similar example can be found in Karageorghis, Ancient Art from Cyprus : The Cesnola Collection (2000 New York), p. 290 fig 480. Weight: 1.55 gDiameter: 24 mmCondition: Excellent, beautifully preserved, with no restorations. Provenance:From the collection of the artist Michael Michaeledes, acquired in London, 1960s-early 1970s. Michaeledes was born in Cyprus in 1923 and moved to London in 1955. He was a successful artist and his works are represented at museums and institutions throughout the world. Most pieces in his collection appear to have been purchased in London salerooms in the 1960s. This earring was purchased at Sothebys, London, on the 8th January 1968, lot. 158 (part).
