An ancient literary work attributed to Ptahhotep, a vizier under King Isesi of the Egyptian Fifth Dynasty (ca. 2414-2375 BC). It is a collection of maxims and advice in the sebayt ("teaching") genre on human relations, that are directed to his son. The work survives today in papyrus copies, including the Prisse Papyrus which dates from the Middle Kingdom and is on display at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. There are considerable differences between the Prisse Papyrus version and the two texts at the British Museum. In the introduction, the author explains the reason for writing the instruction, namely his having reached old age and wanting to pass on the wisdom of his ancestors who had, in his words, listened to the gods. The Maxims are conformist precepts extolling such civil virtues as truthfulness, self-control and kindness towards one's fellow beings. Learning by listening to everybody and knowing that human knowledge is never perfect are a leitmotif. Avoiding open conflict wherever possible should not be considered weakness. Justice should be pursued and in the end it will be a god's command that prevails. Some of the maxims refer to one's behavior when in the presence of the great, how to choose the right master and how to serve him. Others teach the correct way to lead through openness and kindness. Greed is the base of all evil and should be guarded against, while generosity towards family and friends is praiseworthy. Rise in the social order should be accepted as a gift from an Egyptian god and could be preserved by accepting the precedence of one's superior. CONDITION: NEW. New oversized softcover. PUBLISHER REVIEWS: REVIEW: Since the invasion of Europeans to Africa, they have presented African thoughts and philosophies as European. This book discovered in the papyrus of Prisse will provide a small insight to the level of wisdom that existed in Africa 2424-2375 BC. REVIEW: The Oldest Book Known Is there anything whereof it may be said, See, this is new! It hath been already of old time, which was before us. There is no remembrance of former things; Neither shall there be any remembrance Of things that are to come with those that shall come after. REVIEW: Asa Grant Hilliard III (August 22, 1933 – August 13, 2007) was an African-American professor of educational psychology who worked on indigenous ancient African history (ancient Egyptian), culture, education and society. He was the Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Urban Education at Georgia State University, with joint appointments in the Department of Educational Policy Studies and the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education. REVIEW: Larry Williams is a well-known trader, author, newsletter editor, and money manager. He is the all-time top winner of the Robbins World Cup Championship in Futures Trading, taking $10,000 to $1,100,000 in less than twelve months. He has served on the Board of the National Futures Association and twice ran for the U.S. Senate in Montana. Featured in such publications as Barron's, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Fortune, Mr. Williams has been one of the most widely quoted and followed advisors over the past twenty-five years. His other books published by Wiley include Day Trade Futures Online and Long-Term Secrets to Short-Term Trading. PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS: REVIEW: Great common-sense morality, the “Original Ten Commandments”. Ptahhotep was a vizier in ancient Egypt who was known for his influential wisdom literature. The teachings in this book emphasize the importance of humility, faithfulness to one’s own duties, and that silence really can be golden. Highly recommended, excellent translation. REVIEW: It is widely believed that philosophy was the craft of Europeans citing the works of Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Kant and others. Little is known about the origins of Western philosophy and its roots to Africa and to the Oldest Books in the World. This book will bring you further to the origin of philosophy and will take you back to the beginning of thought itself. READER REVIEWS: REVIEW: Although this book is of very small stature (in regards to pages), it packs some of the most MIND -BLOWING historical information I've ever read!!! All backed by reference materials from other authors, who substantiate it all!!! Dr. Hilliard DEFINITELY did his homework, research, examinations...whatever you'd like to call it...all in this "Little-Big Book!!! I am presently preparing to purchase all his reference materials used to write this book as that I can truthfully say..."I heard it from the Horse's Mouth!!!" If you as a reader, who strives to know the truth, and nothing but the truth, then get this book!!!!!!!!!! What was taught in History Class, when I went to school, was ALWAYS SUSPECT to me then. After reading this book, confirms what I felt back then...and DEFINITELY NOW!!! A simple read, with a lot of guidance to teaching or educating you how to live in "Everyday Life," or what your "Bible" taught you about in the "Ten Commandments." I believe that many will not want to hear this truth, but I am not one of the "many." I hope that you are not too. Get the won't be disappointed!!!!!! REVIEW: One of the major reasons why this book is so interesting is because it shows that Black people actually wrote in that time period. Furthermore, these teachings were originally written in hieroglyphics which demonstrates the fact that we had our own writing style and language as well. In addition, this proves that there are written records showing how civilized and accommodating to one another Black people were since the beginning of time. The teachings of Ptahhotep are what I like to call the original ten commandments. REVIEW: I finished this book with in 2-3 days of leisure reading and this book has teachings that you will not learn in college. Being from African and Spanish background I have been inspired to learn more about my people’s history and why we are deprived from it. One of my favorite lines from the book is "To see everyone is to satisfy the many. Any riches that you have are useless without the many". REVIEW: This a very enlightening book that shows the greatness of Ancient Kemet. The teachings of Ptahhotep is a pre-cursor to the world's religions (Islam, Christianity). Easy instructions or codes of conduct on how to live your life with decency and integrity. Live your life by Ma'at principles. A must read. REVIEW: Good short read. Definitely shows the origins of some of the morals and life teachings of mankind. Respect, honor, wisdom, love, truth, knowledge, etc. The Book covers just about everything one should do to keep their household in good order. REVIEW: The oldest book in the world is the filled with wisdom quotes and teachings on how one is to conduct ones life and how to treat his fellow man. It is a very quick read. It can also be used as a great reference book. I found this little book to be more than I expected. REVIEW: Great book. "In the end only Maat last". I like the African Proverb at the beginning of the postscript; "A counselor who understands proverbs soon sets difficult matters aright". Do Maat and live, it worked for our ancestors so it should work for us. REVIEW: Great Read!! Short, concise and intuitive yet it is very dense and allows you to read and apply your own perspectives to the teachings as your grow through life. Definitely a book that I will be passing down to my kids and recommending to family and friends. REVIEW: I've read and studied the Husia's version of these teachings, and I believe Asa G. Hilliard III has done a much better job with his translation. This book is a solid foundation for creating a mindset of righteousness. This is what people of African roots need. I wish I would have read this years ago when I was introduced to the Husia (another good book of instruction). There is much wisdom in this short read. REVIEW: The wisdom of Africans that has lasted for millenniums. It has been duplicated by Christianity, Judaism and Islam but reading it in its original form helps you to see the flaws in the others. This teaching are NOT about religion at all which is the beauty of if. It is about a way of life and thinking all the time = spiritual. This to me is what is lost on the religions inspired by it and other writings from the Kemetic philosophy and teaching. REVIEW: Billed as the oldest book this philosopher of the Old Kingdom shows in many ways that times have not changed that much. His wisdom can still be applied to today's world. If you're an Egyptophile, it is one of those books that you should read. I think its wisdom inspired Wisdom Literature in the Bible as some of the thoughts are similar. REVIEW: Reading some of the first original works of God Ptah, really does brings everything into perspective. We as a people, "were, and still are great men of God Ptah". REVIEW: This book is short read but wonderful!!! This are the kind of books that makes the human brain look into a different perspective in spirituality and the origins of a lot of our thoughts on religion and spirituality. REVIEW: Very good practical information that can be used daily in ones life. And at the end of the book it has extra definition and knowledge on ancient kemet about university and religious temples and great people of ancient Egypt. REVIEW: A great book indeed. It is full of ancient Afrikan wisdom and sayings, etc. I urge all who are interested in ancient Egyptian (Kemetic) wisdom to purchase this book. REVIEW: The philosophy that Ptahhotep emphasize is a great way to live by. I already found that I shared some of the philosophies he speaks of. I will learn to incorporate the other teachings. It's a small book to due scholars not having access to all his work. Most was destroyed or kept in private libraries. If you're seeking something other than Christian-Judeo teachings. You have found what you've been looking for. Htp!!! REVIEW: Insightful direct timeless literature from a father to a son that advices us all. I enjoyed and recommend this quick read! REVIEW: I have read this one over and over and over again. It is filled with simplistic wisdom that each and every day it reminds me of how one should behave in order to be the person he/she should and would like to be or become. This one truly is a jewel. I carry it in my pocketbook every day and moments of inactivity I read it. REVIEW: Excellent source of African wisdom in ancient history. This wisdom began in the interior of Africa, at the foothills of the moon, where the God Hapi dwells. REVIEW: It's a great Ntw Ntcher to read if you want to decipher where a great deal of the ten commandments and proverbs came from. REVIEW: Great way to start and getting into the spiritual knowledge of self and growth. For people who want to get in touch with their roots and original practices of Africa REVIEW: Compact but very informative read. Professor Hilliard does a wonderful job in translating this lost jewel of knowledge from a time once-forgotten. REVIEW: This big is short and straight to the point Ptahhotep was a very knowledgeable man. I read this book in 45 minutes but gain a lot of wisdom. REVIEW: When one discovers the real truth about history, it causes deep meditation and a better understanding of the present day treatment of people of color! REVIEW: Short and to the point. This was an eye opener. I have already used it with my children. REVIEW: Great ancient wisdom to glean from. I would refer this book to anyone who seeks African insight on morality and justice. REVIEW: I'm enjoying this book. It provides great spiritual messages. It's a must have for anyone who is looking to build their spiritual practices and use Kemetic teachings. REVIEW: I found this book to be very insightful, filled with common sense. The book is very easy to follow. A must have for any book collection. REVIEW: This is a special little book, full of deceptively simple, yet meaningful bits of wisdom. More importantly, it is part of the cultural legacy of perhaps the greatest civilization in the history of the world. It is indeed fortunate that this book has been made available to us today, and I would highly recommend it. REVIEW: Very insightful. Things I've read you would think would be everyday knowledge but it it is not. I'm grateful for this book. REVIEW: Anyone familiar with biblical proverbs will appreciate the fact that these writings precede proverbs and that much written in proverbs was extracted from this. REVIEW: Good short readings of the oldest book in the world...Only wish so much of the history was not destroyed/lost.... REVIEW: Outstanding introduction to Kemetic Deep Thought, expressed in Medew Netcher. An excellent start to decolonizing the African mind specifically and the world mind in general. REVIEW: This book is short, easy reading with also documentation and referencing, an additional tool to studies on Alkebu-lan (Africa). I highly Recommend this book. REVIEW: Awesome book, great read... This is a very good book for the children to read. So they can see more then what they are learning in class rooms. REVIEW: I gave this book to my son, age 9, he said it was...'pretty cool'. REVIEW: Practice these principles and it makes a difference how your life folds proves too be helpful in times of moral decisions REVIEW: This book has good practical tips for dealing with people. REVIEW: The oldest book in the world and yet, it teachings stood the test of time, those teachings are still very relevant! REVIEW: What a great book to get me started on a quest for more knowledge. Whether via padded mailer or box, we will give discounts for multiple purchases. International orders are welcome, but shipping costs are substantially higher. Most international orders cost an additional $12.99 to $33.99 for an insuredshipment in a heavily padded mailer, and typically includes some form of rudimentary tracking and/or delivery confirmation (though for some countries, this is only available at additional cost). There is also a discount program which can cut postage costs by 50% to 75% if you’re buying about half-a-dozen books or more (5 kilos+). Rates and available services vary a bit from country to country. You can email or message me for a shipping cost quote, but I assure you they are as reasonable as USPS rates allow, and if it turns out the rate is too high for your pocketbook, we will cancel the sale at your request. We do NOT recommend uninsured shipments, and expressly disclaim any responsibility for the loss of an uninsured shipment. Unfortunately the contents of parcels are easily “lost” or misdelivered by postal employees – even in the USA. That’s why all of our domestic shipments (and most international) shipments include a USPS delivery confirmation tag; or are trackable or traceable, and all shipments (international and domestic) are insured. We do offer U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail, Registered Mail, and Express Mail for both international and domestic shipments, as well United Parcel Service (UPS) and Federal Express (Fed-Ex). Please ask for a rate quotation. We will accept whatever payment method you are most comfortable with. If upon receipt of the item you are disappointed for any reason whatever, I offer a no questions asked return policy. Send it back, I will give you a complete refund of the purchase price (less our original shipping costs). Most of the items I offer come from the collection of a family friend who was active in the field of Archaeology for over forty years. However many of the items also come from purchases I make in Eastern Europe, India, and from the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) from various institutions and dealers. Though I have always had an interest in archaeology, my own academic background was in sociology and cultural anthropology. After my retirement however, I found myself drawn to archaeology as well. Aside from my own personal collection, I have made extensive and frequent additions of my own via purchases on Ebay (of course), as well as many purchases from both dealers and institutions throughout the world - but especially in the Near East and in Eastern Europe. I spend over half of my year out of the United States, and have spent much of my life either in India or Eastern Europe. In fact much of what we generate on Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay goes to support The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as some other worthy institutions in Europe connected with Anthropology and Archaeology. I acquire some small but interesting collections overseas from time-to-time, and have as well some duplicate items within my own collection which I occasionally decide to part with. Though I have a collection of ancient coins numbering in the tens of thousands, my primary interest is in ancient jewelry. My wife also is an active participant in the "business" of antique and ancient jewelry, and is from Russia. I would be happy to provide you with a certificate/guarantee of authenticity for any item you purchase from me. There is a $2 fee for mailing under separate cover. Whenever I am overseas I have made arrangements for purchases to be shipped out via domestic mail. If I am in the field, you may have to wait for a week or two for a COA to arrive via international air mail. But you can be sure your purchase will arrive properly packaged and promptly - even if I am absent. And when I am in a remote field location with merely a notebook computer, at times I am not able to access my email for a day or two, so be patient, I will always respond to every email.
