A wonderful ancient Chinese Han Dynasty agricultural scene of a pig pen, dating to the later eastern Han period, around 100 - 220 AD.

A charming scene, this wonderful piece is a fine example of the development of Han Dynasty art.

Agricultural scenes such as this are a known type of terracotta art from the Han dynasty and are a very visual representation of the hopes of the original owner to take his present life into the next. The ordinary agricultural scene was a source of comfort and perhaps also a display of wealth and abundance.

Models of pigsties have been found in Henan, Hubei and Sichuan provinces.  In this example, we see the animal sleeping in his enclosure next to his sty, a vivid evocation of rural life in Han Dynasty China.

With a fantastic sense of life, the razor backed hog is shown sleeping lazily in the confines of its pen, one can truly feel the animal’s inner nature, and its attitude is strikingly familiar to us today. As such, this is much more than simply a visual document, the scene is so distant, yet so relatable, it allows us a brief moment of emotional connection with the society it is depicting.

Provenance:

Formerly in the collection of Mr. M. O'Hara (the full name and a picture of Mr. O'Hara will be provided to the new purchaser upon request).

Mr. O'Hara was a prominent numismatist, author and collector who in later life developed a passion for Chinese terracotta art of the Han - Song period. He sought only the finest examples of their type, buying at a time in the late 1980s when examples without widespread deceptive restorations could still be acquired.  ArtAncient purchased the entire collection directly from his heirs and is now honoured to present these items to the market after nearly 35 years.
