These beads were sourced in Afghanistan (near the city of Balkh in Northern Afghanistan) and originate probably from the Greek Macedonian period. Balkh is located in the North of Afghanistan which in the antiquity was called the city of Bactria. For a long period, Bactria was one of the important ancient civilizations. It was the capital of Greeks in Central Asia after the conquests of Alexander the Great. These beads are strung temporarily. The string used is new. History Bactria (Bactriana) was the ancient Greek name of the country between the range of the Hindu Kush and Amu Darya with the capital Bactra (now called Balkh in Afghanistan - it is now a small town in the Province of Balkh, Afghanistan, about 20 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital, Mazar-e Sharif, and some 46 miles (74 km) south of the Amu Darya). To the east, it was bordered by the ancient region Gandhara (the ancient name of a region in eastern Afghanistan and north-west Pakistan centered on the Swat River and Kabul River. Alexander the Great conquered the Hindu Kush region in 329 BC. The Kushan dominated the areas of Hindu Kush into Kabul, Gandhara, northern Pakistan and north-western India. They controlled the trade between India, China, Parthia and the Roman Empire. This provided an ideal medium for the further spread of Buddhism. From the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD, Buddhism gradually developed in northwestern India and the great Kushan ruler, Kanishak (reigned from 144 – 172), was converted. Under his influence, Gandhara, a Buddhist settlement, flourished and created a distinctive Greco-Buddhist art form, which affected the arts in Central Asia and eastward in the first four centuries of our era. In 220 AD the Kushan empire fragments into petty dynasties. Indo-Pacific glass trade beads : These rare tiny ancient Indo-Pacific glass trade beads date to circa 100 BC – 500 AD; this is between 2000 and 1500 years old. The beads are strung temporarily. The string used is new. This strand does not have a clasp and is not a ready to wear jewelry. History Numerous glass beads of Indian manufacture found throughout Southeast Asia attest to the growing trade between these countries. Indo-Pacific Glass Beads are small, monochrome drawn (cut from a tube) beads are found at archaeological sites all over Southeast Asia. These beads were made by a unique method developed in South India several centuries B.C. It is still in use. Indian Bead makers settled in the Southeast Asia region in the first century A.D. or so some of the bead makers went elsewhere: Mantai, Sri Lanka, Khlong Thom, Thailand and Oc-eo, Vietnam. Oc-eo and Khlong Thom were part of Funan, the first state in Southeast Asia. Their products seem to have enjoyed prestige all over the Indo-Pacific region. These beads are also found in royal or noble tombs in China. In ca. 50 A.D. - 500 A.D., the kingdom of Funan in Cambodia and southern Vietnam serves as a meeting point for traders from China, Southeast Asia, India, and West. Funan is thought to be a Chinese transcription of the term bnam. When Funan fell apart, the bead-makers apparently moved to its successor, Srivijaya. The worked in Malaysia, Thailand and as well as Srivijaya / Palembang, Indonesia itself. By the time the Sailendra dynasty fell and the capital was moved to Jambi, Indo-Pacific bead-production had disappeared in Southeast Asia. Indo-Pacific beads also went west. Arab traders took them to trade into Africa. The Portuguese continued the pattern. These beads are excavated all over Southeast Asia from Vietnam, Cambodia to Borneo (Indonesia).
