Seller: howardturner (802) 100%, Location: Ridgefield, Connecticut, Ships to: US, Item: 254375612791 This is a beautiful and rare ancient :Bamiyan" ceramic bowl decorated in a style known as Splashed Sgraffiato ware. This type of pottery was extremely popular in ancient times due to its "splashed" colofull glazed paint and its incised Sagraffiato designs (scratched in slip before firing). It dates to 1100-1200 AD when the Islamic culture was considered to be the most enlightened in the world. The bowl is 3 1/2" tall and flares outward from a footed base that is 21/2" in diameter to a rim that 6" in diameter. The inside (cavetto) of this beautiful bowl is decorated with carved arches and stylized birds, painted in manganese green and bordered by elaborate carved designs. Teh central region (tondo) of the bowl is decorated with the convergence of three carved decorative circles. Splashed green has been used throughout the vessel and has been allowed to run between the thick glaze. As can be seen in the pictures the bowl has been professionally repaired from tow large fragments on one side. There is the expected wear but the bowl is 100% intact and exceptional in its appearance. For reference please see Early Islamic Pottery by Arthur Lane (Keeper of the Department of Ceramics in the Victoria and Albert Museum) in London, Purchased from London art dealer in 2006 and carries a COA from them.
