The name Ammonite was probably first inferred by almost 2000 years ago by Pliny the Elder. He called these fossils ammonis cornua or the horns of Ammon. Why Ammon? Ammon, the Egyptian god, was usually shown wearing head wear fashioned from the curved horns of rams. In addition to its use as a recognizable name for the ancient fossils, the name Ammonites was used by a race of an ancient Semitic people closely related to the Hebrews first mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 19:38. Some Ammonite fossils are over six feet in diameter. One source suggested that the original discus used by the Greeks may have been made from Ammonite fossils. Many pieces of Ammonite have snake heads carved into them, probably as a result of a long-ago misidentification of the Ammonite fossil as fossilized snakes. In addition to ornamental and jewelry uses, Ammonite is used by geologists and paleontologists for biostratigraphy – the linking the rock layer in which they are found to specific geological time periods. Ammonite fossils have been identified in the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods – yes, the Age of the Dinosaurs. Colors and Sources: Ammonite comes in a range of greyish-brown to black colors derived from the fossilization process when they were preserved. Adding to their charm, growth lines, spines and ridges are often present in well-preserved examples. Ammonites are found throughout the world wherever ancient seas existed. Notable finds are in Canada, India, Madagascar and the United States of America, to name only a few localities. ____________________________________ Sources Note: Due to current political conditions, all imports (including gemstones) from some countries are not permitted under United States law. However, rather than breaking the law, we choose to work toward changing these laws in a orderly and legal manner and encourage you to do the same. ____________________________________ Important Note about Color: The actual color and lightness/darkness of the stone will vary from what is displayed on your monitor. There are many reasons that can cause this visual situation, One of the more important reason is the difference between transmitted light color (such as light shining through a gemstone), color generation simulations and adjustments (such as your monitor) and reflected light (light bouncing off objects). Add to this each individual’s personal color sensitivities along with variances in ambient (surrounding) light sources used when the photo was taken as well as those where you are looking at the stone. You should expect that the actual item shading and coloring will vary from what you see on any monitor or printed piece. ____________________________________ Care: Ammonite should be cleaned using lukewarm, mild, soapy water and rinsed with the same temperature water. Avoid hot temperature as well as sudden changes of temperature. As with all fine jewelry, remove before doing any type of physical work. Traditional gemstone procedure of storing in soft cloth away from other articles of jewelry hold true, too. Ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaners should never be used. ____________________________________ International Shipments: Our information on International Shipments can be read by clicking on the following link. Information on International Shipping ____________________________________ Lobster & Spring Clasps These clasps both have springs as an integral part of their mechanism. Should a clasp stop working, I suggest a very quick (light) spray of a lubricant such as WD-40 and then gently moving the clasp open to close a few times to allow the spring mechanism to function again. ____________________________________ Ring Resizing: With our facilities, we can only stretch some rings to a larger size. This is usually up to one-half size larger and, depending on the style, enlarge to one full size larger. We do not reduce ring sizes. Because of the risk of permanent damage, we only enlarge the rings we sell.
