Vintage 1940’s Linen Era Postcard In hybrid TINTED HALFTONE POSTCARD TOPIC Airplane View of BILTMORE HOUSE Asheville, North Carolina Construction 1890-1895. Vanderbilt’s 250-room French Renaissance chateau is a true marvel, the largest undertaking in residential architecture. Over a six-year period, an entire community of craftsmen comes together to create America’s premier home and the environmental wonderland that surrounds it. Published by: Asheville Postcard Co. (1910-1982) 31 Carolina Avenue, Asheville, North Carolina Founder: Lamar Campbell LeCompte (1888-1977) Founded by Lamar Campbell LeCompte in 1910, Asheville Postcard Company was a major publisher of collotype and linen postcards that went on to produce photochromes. The majestic beauty of North Carolina and surrounding states was captured for all posterity in the iconic images of the Asheville Postcard company. Asheville Postcard Company became the largest distributor of postcards, south of Washington, DC. LeCompte soon started to publish his own postcards, travelling around taking photographs of buildings and scenes that he thought would be of interest, and using a publisher to print the cards. Their cards were manufactured by many different printers. After LeCompte’s death in 1977 the company continued to publish postcards as well as sell novelties, but they were eventually taken over by Aerial Photography Services. CONDITION: Excellent! UNUSED and UNPOSTED Picture side in very nice condition. Corners and edges in good condition. No creases, tears, pinholes, smears, stains, or mold. DESCRIPTION Standard Size: 5 ½ X 3 ½ / 14cm X 8.9cm Print Date: 1940’s Postcard Era: Linen Era (1930-1945) Printing Process: hybrid TINTED HALFTONE Linen Era (1930-1945) New American printing processes allowed printing on postcards with a high rag content. The rag content also gave these postcards a textured "feel". They were also cheaper to produce and allowed the use of bright dyes for image coloring. They were printed as hand drawn tinted halftones. The majority of linen postcard production ended around 1939. Printing Process Tinted Halftone Halftone is the reprographic technique that simulates continuous tone imagery through the use of dots, varying either in size or in spacing, thus generating a gradient-like effect. The halftone process reduces visual reproductions to an image that is printed with only one color of ink. Printing in color was found by creating a hybrid TINTED HALFTONE that would use a single photographic halftone in the same way as the linear key drawing that held the dots of a chromolithograph together, but here the color pallet would be reduced to a few hand drawn tints. Since these color plates were created by hand, there were many variations to how these postcards look. I accept PayPal.
