EARLY METHOD OF MAKING CRYSTAL RELICS: Glass - making in ancient Southeast Asia began with quartz, small pieces of the material would be finely crushed and mixed with 'halophyte' plant ash (a major source of alkali). The quartz-ash mixture was then heated at a fairly low temperature in clay containers to roughly 750 degrees celsius, until it formed a ball of molten material. This material was then cooled, crushed, and mixed with color agents to make red, blue, or green. After coloring, the glass would be funneled into a cylindrical clay mold and heated a second time at a higher temperature. Once the container cooled it would be broked and the thick glass ingots that formed during the cooling process were removed. Finally, modeling, scraping, grinding, and polishing were the techiques most widely used during the finishing process of the object.xxxx Early quartz crystal objects of this type have been defined as the first highly technological compositions, and to emphasize its status as an artificial medium, rendering it effectively a precious stone.
