This sextant was purchased on a trip layover in London, England in 1970. History of the maker: The Heath name stood for quality from the early days of the London scientific instrument trade. The Thomas Heath company dates back to 1720. In 1845 Thomas Heath II took over the Co. and the name was changed to Heath and Co. It continued in business till the mid 20th century. This instrument is the "three ring" frame design type, Hezzanith sextant. Instrument Condition: Exceptional. The Index arm clamp works freely, and the tangent screw moves smoothly as it should. The horizon and index mirrors are in good condition, as are the four index and three horizon shades. One can navigate with the stars or sun, today, just the same as the day this instrument was made. Beautiful polished brass! Operation: The arc measures from -5 to plus 150 degrees. Readings are taken with a swinging magnifier lens. A vernier style tangent screw at the end of an arm engages with worm teeth cut on the underside of the limb. The readings are entered into sight reduction tables to accurately find, and plot ones latitude and longitude, on a chart. The Mahogany case dimensions are: 10.5 X 11.0 X 5.5 inches. Instrument weight is: 3 pounds 7 oz. Total weight with case is: 8 pounds 2 oz. The mahogany case is in generally good condition. There are naturally, signs of age. There is a slight split from age, in wood on the top cover. See pictures of case. These slight imperfections are not unusual in instrument cases of this age, and lend character.
