TIBET. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Title: Antique Bronze Sacred Standing Lao Buddha. Laotian Art. 19/20th Century. Description: An exceptional Bronze alloy Lao Crowned Buddha, originating from a temple precinct in northern Laos, depicted standing on a small ornate plinth, a symmetrically arranged figure modeled with a somewhat flattened profile with both hands lowered in the 'Vitarka' mudra, the gesture of teaching and instruction. He is richly crowned with a tall headdress, dressed in royal attire with the robe covering both shoulders, secured by a decorative belt cascading into a central panel. The diaphanous garment itself is simplistic in design, draped over the arms, with the presence of an undergarment visible at the hem of the outer robe. xxxx Typical of Lao figures the head is covered in small hair curls sumounted by a cranial protuberance, rising to an ornate diadem finial. The face with downcast expression, ridged eyebrows connected above a prominent nose, incised broad lips and small smile, and elongated earlobes short of the shoulders. xxxx Sculpted in the form of a standing image, the figure was primarily cast from 'Copper' (90%) and 'Tin' (10%), obtained from the smelting of sacred metals and religious artifact fragments. Several holy minerals were then added in completing the purity of the metal - for instance black mercury from Laos, Nampy Steel from Prasaeng pond in Utaradit province, and the most sacred and important rare mineral was Chaonamngern (Blue Metal) found only in some heavily wooded areas in the mountainous regions of Laos and Thailand. In addition, prior to the actual manufacturing of these sacred figures - magic letters and drawings are created according to ancient holy scriptures, established by master Buddhist Monks; along with extensive ceremonial prayer, practiced by the gathering of several temple monks. After production of the Buddha - they are blessed and consecrated through infinte virtues and supreme meditative powers. Origin:xxxxxxxxx Temple District, northern Laos.
