Laotian Style Art with Buddhism Influence via Kingdom of Dvaravati. Overview: This particular bronze image is of a rare and sacred Laotian Meditating Temple Buddha, considered to be one of most innovative and earlier representations of the Buddha, portrayed seated on small base, in the subduing Mara position, and with the head covered in pointed hair curls, domed ushnisha, and tall flame finial. A technique very interesting, as it demonstrates the influence in which Buddhism had on its Laotain artisan, which is believed to have first reached Laos during the 7th - 8th centuries CE, via the kingdom of Dvaravati - a school dedicated to Buddhist sculpture, which started to emerge from previous Pala styles, and spread throughout surrounding countries. This particular statue was originally enthroned on a elevated plinth, which would have been carved at the top where the Buddha would be inserted. Image Details: The image of Buddha is depicted seated cross-legged in meditation with a large rosette medallion on the sole of the right foot. The left hand resting palm-open on his lap, while the right hand forms the 'Maravijaya' mudra, or the gesture of subduing Mara. The Buddha is portrayed with a downcast expression, the face is serene, with well defined features, wearing a monastic garment which appears diagonally covering the left shoulder, with a wide highly decorated end fold draped to his mid section, and secured by a wide belt. The head is covered in somewhat pointed tightly curled hair rising to a hemispherical 'Ushnisha', rising to an intricately detailed flame finial. Other features - pierced eyes, broad smiling mouth, small band separates the forehead from the hairline, elongated Lao style earlobes, long hands with fingers of equal length, and a well-carved rosette on the sole of the foot, highly detailed hands, feet, and toes. The entirety is supported by a small single level base which would have been inserted into an elevated altar. xxxxThe bronze is extremely heavy for its size, with the alloy being thick within the sculptures body. The naturally aged surface is covered in somewhat of a multi tone patina, with thick blackened lacquer, gilt gold, and green malachite oxidation developing throughout, and primarily at the base from sitting in moisture. The core within the bronze is completely intact, consisting of a tempered sandy-clay core. The figure remains in its original state as acquire with no condition issues.
