Description: We are pleased to offer this exquisite image of a Meditating Crowned Royal Buddha, from a temple precinct in north central Thailand. The figure was created in the style of the early Rattanakosin Period, which features survived into the current Rattanakosin period. The piece is symmetrically arranged and extremely well modeled in profusely adorned Royal Attire, and elevated on an alter-like pedestal. Cast in bronze the image is depicted meditating in the seated position or 'Virasana' pose, with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The hands overlap one another displaying the 'Dhyana' mudra, the attainment of spiritual prefection, and the concentration on good law, gesture. Symmetrically arranged the figure is clothed in regal attire, a smooth clinging diaphanous garment, which covers both shoulders and is embellished with wire-like jeweled ornamentation of floral patterns. The head is adorned with a 'Mukuta' style crown, surmounted by a domed-shaped 'Ushnisha', consisting of graduated round-edged sections divided by rings, and which terminate into a tall gem finial. The crown itself is ornamented with projecting flanges at both sides, and incised wire-like designs across the front of the crown. At the back, below the major band is a plate covering the lower part of the head, bearing incised rasp-like hair curls. The face depicts a serene meditative expression with down-cast almond-shaped eyes slit, arched eyebrows carved in relief, join in the middle above a prominent nose, well shaped mouth with the upper lip incised, and elongated earlobes resting short of the shoulders. Cast in the lost wax method, the bronze alloy has a naturally aged dark brown patina covered in gold lacquer pigment, and with an underlayment of black lacquer pigment and typical of rattanakosin images the altar landing are of red lacquer. The core with in the bronze consist of a tempered sandy-clay mixture, and is vissibly completely in tack. Significance: Typical of Sacred Temple Relics the figure was primarily cast from 'Copper' (90%) and 'Tin' (10%), with tempered sandy-clay core. Blessed and consecrated by Siamese Guru Monks.
