Subtitle: Combined Art Style of Post Bayon Khmer and Laos Early Period Buddhist Art. Description: We are pleased to offer this exquisite image of a Meditating Crowned Royal Buddha, from a temple precinct in northern Laos. The figure was created in the earlier style of northern Laos art, and subsequently influenced by its neighboring Khmer culture, a style known in Laos Buddhist art history as "Chieng Lung" Buddha art. The figure is symmetrically arranged and extremely well modeled in profusely adorned Royal Attire, and elevated on an alter-like pedestal of floral design. Cast in bronze, the image is depicted meditating in the seated position or 'Virasana' pose, with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The image seated with the right hand held on the right knee in the 'Maravijaya' mudra, in the gesture of subduing Mara. Fingers are of equal length. Symmetrically arranged the figure is clothed in regal attire, a smooth clinging diaphanous garment, which covers the left shoulder leaving the right shoulder and breast uncovered. The head is adorned with a 'Mukuta' style crown, surmounted by a conical-shaped 'Ushnisha', decorated in a floral motif and which terminate into a tall gem finial. The crown itself is ornamented with projecting points at the front, back, and to both sides, embellished with relief carved wire-like floral ornamentation encircling the crown; and continueing down the plate covering the lower part of the head. The face depicts a serene meditative expression with down-cast almond-shaped eyes slit, arched eyebrows carved in relief, join in the middle above a prominent nose, well shaped mouth, and elongated earlobes resting short of the shoulders. Cast in the lost wax method, the bronze alloy has a naturally aged dark brown patina covered in gold lacquer pigment, and with an underlayment of black lacquer pigment which is typical of Shan Lung images. Significance: The core with in the bronze consist of a tempered sandy-clay mixture, later closed by a plasted-sand covering, to protect the core from falling out.
