Title: Antique Bronze Southeast Asia Enthroned Meditating Buddha, Burmese Ava Style Influence. 19/20th C.

Description: Sacred Temple Statue of a rare and unusual Southeast Asia Meditating Buddha, with characteristics similar to Burmese Ava Period Buddhas, portrayed seated on an elevated throne. A technique very interesting, as it demonstrates the Burmese style of the first (1st) Ava period transitioning into the second (2nd) Ava Period style of Buddhist art. These Buddha statues are easily recognizable by their large forehead and pointed chin.

The high throne is decorated in squares of trapped rosettes, and is pierced at the base indicating where two disciples would have kneeled in worship.

The image of Buddha is depicted seated in meditation in the 'Virasana' position, with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The hands resting palm-open on his lap, performing the 'Dhyana' mudra, the gesture of meditation. As with Ava style images the face is oval, with a wide forehead and pointed chin, arched eyebrows connect above downcast eyes, a straight nose with flared nostrils, and a small distinct mouth. Buddha's head is covered by a hemispherical 'Ushnisha', topped by a halo in the shape of a pointed budding lotus flower finial. His heavy torso is clothed in a diaphanous garment which appears diagonally covering the left shoulders, with a end fold draped to the mid-section.

Cast in bronze, with a naturally aged patina of dark chocolate brown with remnants of gold gilding, and sandy-clay core completely intact.

Data Observation: The two foreground holes provide the location where a pair of Disciples would have been placed, and is typically Burmese Ava style.

Remarks: Early rudimentary repair to the front base from a short pour at time of conception; along with some minor casting flaws, ding, dents, and pitting as shown. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
