SALE - PRICE REDUCED FROM $2,899.99 - GREAT VALUE Rare Stucco Fragmented Head of Buddha, 14-16th C. Ayutthaya Period. Museum Quality. Description: An exquisite and extremely rare 14th to 16th century Stucco Head of Buddha, from a temple precinct in the province of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, elegantly modeled with prominently delineated features characteristic of Ayutthaya style and period. A fragmented section sensitively carved in exalted human form, with a serene facial expression, heavily laden meditative eyes partially open, arched eyebrows connect above a prominent nose, with broad fleshy lips slightly recessed at the corners. The curvature of the mouth establishes the images gentle and compassionate expression. The hair is arranged in tight snail-shell curls, individually formed to whorl right, rising up to a gently domed Ushnisha, topped by the remains of a bulbous ornament. xxxxxx Originally modelled as a full figured image, this fragmented portion is an excellent example of Ayutthaya's artistry and iconographic styling of the period, rendered solid, from hand-molded stucco of brownish-white colour, sun dried, then oven-baked in a low temperature kiln, with a naturally aged spotted surface patina. xxxxxxThe piece reveals a well weathered and worn surface, unaltered, with no condition issues, with the exception of obvious incidentals, such as, minor lost to the face, hair curls, and earlobes. Other minor surface degradation, chips, dents, and evidence of selective erosion over time, are a normal part of the sculptures patina, attesting to the age of the piece as maintained. NOTE: STAND NOT INCLUDED. Currently sitting on a rudimentary block. Data Observation: Excellent Condition, with small surface abrasions as noted. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item. Dimensions: Height: 7.50 inches (19.05cm). HEAD ONLY - without the stand.
