UNUSUAL DATED 1855 & 1858 FRENCH INVENTORS THURY & BELNET 12 1/2" DIA. TERRESTRIAL "RELIEF" GLOBE ON DECORATIVE OCHRE MARBLIZED PLINTH STANDING 24" HIGH This highly decorative terrestrial globe is surmounted by hour disk in anodized copper calibrated full meridian, the Empire-revival stand with anodized copper horizon (calibrated 0 to 90 degrees four times) on four curved copper anodized quadrant upright support rods solder connected to a thyrsus-pine-cone-form meridian holder base, with the spreading acanthus- decorated connector situate on simple cylindrical plinth of a molded marblized composition in minutely black streaked ochre base color. An innovative and unusual globe, which according to the printed cartouche, was in fact invented by the proclaimed makers Thury and Belnet of France and awarded medals for such invention in 1855 and 1858 at the Paris and Dijon Expositions. The mapped surface is physically of a raised relief showing relative mountain heights - much like the rarefied flat "relief" maps made in the late 1800's for university consumption and rarely encountered today on the market.  This terrestrial globe consists of overtly detailed cartography, with lands in creamy-tan colors with delicate red lines for territorial borders and with detailed identifications in black type presented in the French dialect. The globe on stand on offer is in the French Empire tradition and taste, atypical of the decorative arts revival styles of the Napoleon III period in France (c. 1852-1870). The cartouche states this globe won prizes in the Paris Exposition of 1855 and also at the 1858 Dijon Exposition - and specifically reads as follows: "MEDAILLE DE 2c CLASSE/ Exposition de Paris 1855/ BREVET D'INVENTION MEDAILLE DE 1r CLASSE/ Exposition de Dijon 1858/ MEDAILLE D'OR/ Academie de Dijon/ S.G.D.G.A/ GLOBE EN RELIEF/ PAR/ THURY & BELNET/ GEOGRAPHES/ Auteurs Editeurs/ DIJON"  This translates out to: "2nd Class Medal / Paris Exposition 1855/ Certificate of Invention First Class Medal/ Dijon Exposition 1858/ Gold Medal/ Dijon Academy / S.G.D.G.A./ Relief Globe/ by / Thury & Belnet/ Geographers/ Authors Editors/ Dijon" Alaska is referred to as "Amerique Russe," which indicates that this Globe was produced well before "Seward's Folly" in 1869 which brought about the transfer of the Alaskan Territory from Russia to America. This 'event' was secretly to pay for the Czar of Russia's help having sent the Russian Fleet to sit in the oceans surrounding the United States in case aid was needed to assist the North during the Civil War. The Czar of Russia helped Lincoln and the Russian Fleet surrounded parts of the US on the East and West.  The monies to be paid back for the Russian support came in the form of a 'worthless' Alaska Territory,  It was used a means to convey payment back to Russia for their services - since the whole affair needed to be covered up - like the Kennedy assassination. The British Illuminati had the Czar of Russia assassinated in 1872, as they had done for Lincoln in 1865 - all written out of 'conventional' history like the JFK assassination.  In his day Lincoln had become the original challenge to a central bank's creation back in the 1860's - underlining the precipitation of his assassination. Globe stands a total of 24" high. A minor crack in surface in a couple of places and a few abrasions showing plaster under surface which can be cleaned up if really desired.  No gashes and dents.  Basically normal wear.  We have found about half dozen of these exact globes pictured on the internet and have found some with white marblized bases, green marblized bases and also black marblized bases, but no ochre marblized bases.   We did find one also with a turned wood base.  Thus a variety of these were made. We found that Christie's South Kensignton sold one of these in 2011 for $1,800 plus premium of 20% or so, and then in 2015 the Dorethea sold one for $2,700 plus premium.  We have found one or two others estimated over $3,500 of late that had sold at auction as well. A very desirable example of an important development in globe making. AS SHOWN above and below. In generally good shape as shown.
