Item:362836348885AKBAR the Great Mughal Emperor of Hindustan 1556-1605 ARrupee 16x23mm 11.1g AH803 =1591 ADtype of KM88 but dated in the 16th centuryex Malloy Abul Fath Jalal ud-din Muhammad Akbar or Akbar-e-Azam (literally Great the Great) was born in 1542 in the House of Timur, son of Humayun, Mughal Emperor and his new 14 year old wife Hamida Banu Begum. Humayun had been defeated in battles against Suri Shah in 1539 and fled to Sindh where he married Hamida and they had Akbar while still in exile. At age 9, Akbar married his 1st cousin, Rugaiya Begum in Kabul. In 1555, Humayun re-conquered Delhi but within 2 days he was dead and 13 year old Akbar was proclaimed emperor. Akbar, unlike his father was extraordinarily successful militarily and used the latest warfare techniques including elephants, matchlocks and cannons, earning his people the nickname “the Gunpowder Empire”. He pushed his way southward through India, into Afghanistan and Central Asia and conquered the Safavids and Deccan Sultanates and set up trade relations with the Portuguese, Ottomans and English. He was an accomplished warrior, artist, blacksmith, carpenter, inventor, animal trainer and theologian that never learned to read or write. He died in 1605 from complications from dysentery and was succeeded by Jahangir. The Mughal (Mongol) Empire (descendants of the Timurids) was founded by Babur in 1483. The empire reigned as the imperial power over 1.2 million square miles of the Indian sub-continent until 1862. The classic period began with Akbar but afterwards began disintegrating due to wars of succession, the Sikhs and British colonization.
