INVENTORY SALE - PRICE REDUCED FROM - $15999.99 - GREAT VALUE Title: Antique Standing Figure of a Male Deity, Pre-Angkor Period 'Phnom Da' Style. Khmer Art 6-7th Century. Authentic Bronze Male Deity, Khmer 'Phnom Da' Style. 6-7th C. Sakon Nakhon Province, Northern Thailand. Overview: A superb 6 to 7th century Khmer Bronze Male Deity Figure, probably that of 'Vishnu', stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional 'Phnom Da' style, from Khmer mythology. The figure is presented in its original unrepaired condition as found, a solid cast elegantly modelled from the lost wax method. As with images from this period, the ornamentation reflects a perfect mastery of sculpting and fluidity. Features of the statue retain characteristics of the earliest Pre-Angkorian era, appearing delicate and refine with natural movement. The statue measures 13.25 inches (33.66cm) in height, including the custom fabricated redwood pedestal. Description: Early Khmer Bronze statue of a male deity discovered over 60 years ago in the Ban Muang district of Sakon Nakhon province of northern Thailand, duely noting as possibly the earliest period of Khmer art. The statue is stylistically related to the group of statues found in southeastern Kampuchea on the Phnom Da Hill near Angkor Borei from which derived the art historical term, the 'Phnom Da' style of Cambodia, and which dates to the sixth century. XXXThe statue is exception, displaying typical Indian movement of the torso with supple modelling, fashioned with an avoid face and hair arranged in overlapping ringlets with a flattened topknot, while the ears are completely covered. The face appears indigenous, typically Khmer, with a serene expression, incised almond-shaped eyes, connected eyebrows above a well-shaped broad nose, wide mouth, and ears covered. XXX The deity is masterfully modelled in realistic human form, standing with a slight 'tribhanga', wearing a loincloth hung low at the waist and folded in front, forming a vertical panel carved in relief, and is tucked in below the navel, indicated by incision. The modelling of the slightly muscular body appears to have been based on natural observation with the hands raised in the 'Abhaya' mudra, the gesture of fearlessness, with the arms elevated, bent at the elbow, and hands with open-palms facing outward. XXX Because it was modeled in the round it can be asssumed it was made as an object of worship and not part of a architectural decoration, and probably represents an avatara of Vishnu.
