An uncommon type of pottery lamp of the early 5th Century, this example features a wide, low profile, made of fine, thin reddish to buff clay and has a wedge shaped handle. The upper surface is finely decorated in relief with plant like concentric semi-circles and raised pellets. Both the central fill hole and wick hole are large. The flat underside is decorated with a faint "shield" shaped concentric design. There is a thin layer of lime encrustation on the surfaces. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Colorado private collection, assembled by a United Nations staffer while working in the Middle East in the mid-1960s, thence by descent to the most recent owner.
