DESCRIPTION: A small, rare and poorly documented type of pottery oil lamp from Palestine or Jordan, Late Roman, 3rd or 4th Century AD. It is formed of very fine buff clay with faint traces of a red slip. It has a pointed loop handle, swags decorating the shoulders and two rows of pellets and vertical lines beneath the handle, a rim around the wide fill hole, large wick hole and circular pad base. The type may be related to the Adler Collection's BN.4 type. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Colorado private collection, assembled by a United Nations staffer while working in the Middle East in the mid-1960s, thence by descent to the most recent owner.
