Seller: clioantiquities (151) 100%, Location: Wilmington, North Carolina, Ships to: US, Item: 132003093797 CULTURE/REGION OF ORIGIN: Late Roman Syria or Asia Minor DATE: Circa AD 400 DIMENSIONS: 10.5 cm (4.13 in.) long DESCRIPTION: An excellent, larger than normal example of a late Roman type from western and northern Syria and southwestern Asia Minor. It is made from fine pink clay with traces of a red slip. The fill hole is surrounded by a square with pellets at the corners, with circle and dot designs around the square, all in relief. The shoulders are decorated in relief with a stylized branch design. It has a high squared handle and rests on a slightly raised circular base. There is soot around the wick hole from use. It is intact with patches of lime and soil encrustation. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Colorado private collection, assembled by a United Nations staffer while working in the Middle East in the mid-1960s, thence by descent to the most recent owner.
