Seller: clioantiquities (173) 100%, Location: Wilmington, North Carolina, Ships to: US, Item: 132824900167 CULTURE / REGION OF ORIGIN: Roman Empire, Eastern European Provinces DATE: Late 3rd - 4th Century AD DIMENSIONS: 9.1 cm (3.58 in.) long DESCRIPTION: A large and unusual variant of the Roman crossbow type fibula. Unlike most crossbow types, which were formed by casting, this example has been formed by hammering a sheet of copper alloy into the desired shape, and decorating the upper surface with a dot and circle punch mark pattern that alternates left to right on the bow and is centered at the foot. The catch plate is large and tightly enclosed, while the iron spring (crossbow fibulae are most commonly hinged) is not boxed or otherwise enclosed and is attached to the bow head. Part of the pin missing, some damage to the catch plate. Alternating light green, dark green and brown patina. Otherwise intact. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a German private collection. COMPARISONS: Similar examples are known from Germany and Eastern Europe. Material: Bronze and Iron
