An unusually large and robust example of a Roman bronze "knee" fibula. The surfaces are overall dark green with patches of reddish-brown and small exposed areas of metal showing through the patina. The coiled spring is fitted through a small vertical plate projecting down from the fan shaped cover, the upper surface of which is decorated along its outer edge with a finely engraved zig-zag pattern, either engraved or hammered. The catch plate drops down from the bow, which features a large multi-angled "knee" and small fan shaped foot. Original pin. An exceptional example of the type.
