Seller: clioantiquities (151) 100%, Location: Wilmington, North Carolina, Ships to: US, Item: 131991129221 A Large Byzantine Pottery Oil Lamp CULTURE/REGION OF ORIGIN: Byzantine Palestine or Syria DATE: 600 - 700 AD DIMENSIONS: 9.5 cm (3.74 in.) long DESCRIPTION: A robust form of Byzantine pottery oil lamp from the Holy Land. It is decorated with transverse lines and other geometric forms on the shoulder and in front of the wick hole and features a spike handle and a raised circular base. It is made from light pinkish to buff clay. One small patch of lime encrustation but otherwise with very clean surfaces. Intact but for a small chip on one side below the nozzle. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Colorado private collection, assembled by a United Nations staffer while working in the Middle East in the mid-1960s, thence by descent to the most recent owner.
