Description: An amazing Khmer Terracotta hand-carved temple figure from Khmer mythology, depicting a forest dwelling visionary known in Cambodia as "Rosei", a hermit sage with supernatural powers with the abilities to make philosphical worldly predictions. XXX Dedicated to the higher spiritual practice, the figure is portrayed seated on a pedestal with his legs crossed in the attitude of meditation, with both hands resting on his lap overlaping on another in the 'dhyana' mudra, the attainment of spiritual perfection gesture. The elevated hollow clay basin in which he sits serves as a medicinal herb storage container - used by shaman practitioners who engage in the art of herbal healing. XXX The thinly profiled hermit is depicted barefoot, wearing a long monk styyle garment, covering the left shoulder with a folded sash draped to his mid-section. XXX Typical of hermit sages he wears an ornate headdress fashioned with floral flanges at both sides and a pair of patruding horns, and fitted with a plate at the back of the head. His faces reflects a gazed expression, characterized by a long hair pulled back from his face, gathered in a tophat, ridged eyebrows, prominent nose, wide well-shaped mouth, and elongated earlobes are typical khmer style attributes, and compliment the artist's rendition. Lersi's are usually shown unclothed above the waist, thinly profiled, wearing a mere garment, secured by a simple cord, and as always depicted bare footed. Hermit Sage - in general Lersi (rosei) are known as 'Ascetics' and are characterized by refraining from worldly pleasures. Those who practice this lifestyle hope to achieve greater spirituality, and believe the action of purifying the body helps to purify the soul and thus obtain a greater connection with the divine.
