DESCRIPTION: An amulet of the baboon headed deity Hapi, one of the four sons of Horus. This fragmentary funerary amulet (the lower third lacking), intended to be included in mummy wrappings, is flat and formed of deep blue faience. The baboon head is typically schematic but clearly distinguishable. A hole for sewing the amulet into a bead net or into the mummy wrapping fabric is visible at the top of the figure. Well preserved with pale cream and brown encrustation mostly on one side. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Los Angeles private collection, acquired by the most recent owner on the U.S. art market in the late 1980s. COMPARISONS: See a group of all four Sons of Horus as flat rectangular amulets in the online museum collections of San Francisco State University, item MDB-06-557, with Hapi second from left.
