Seller: clioantiquities (151) 100%, Location: Wilmington, North Carolina, Ships to: US, Item: 132017703276 CULTURE/REGION OF ORIGIN: Roman Palestine DATE: Circa AD 600 DIMENSIONS: 9.5 cm (3.74 in.) long DESCRIPTION: A Byzantine period mold-made pottery lamp of buff-pink clay of a type widespread in early Byzantine Palestine and adjacent areas. It is decorated with radial lines on the shoulder and a stylized menorah on a tripod near the nozzle in relief. A raised rim and channel surrounds the central fill hole. The type typically has no handle. It rests on a raised ring base and is intact but for very minor chipping in two locations. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Colorado private collection, assembled by a United Nations staffer while working in the Middle East in the mid-1960s, thence by descent to the most recent owner.
