This is a very rare film story of the Japanese salvaging and re floating the Chinese Cruiser, probably the Ping Hai in 1938. This footage is old, but it is so amazing to see and well worth watching this rare piece of history. The Japanese sunk this ship in 1936 on the Yangtze River and used cable and block and tackle to re float her. Second part is the fleet sailing down the river and firing at mines in the water. The final footage is of 2 or 3 airplanes fighting a dog fight above them. Again Amazing stuff. 10" 16 Min's 5th Film: "USS Panay Story". This the Newsreel of the plight of the USS Panay Gunboat on the Yangtze River. Their mission was to rescue American citizens but the Japanese bombed and sank her claiming that they could not see an American flag. The Japanese also claimed afterward that it was an accident. Later, the US broke the Japanese code and it was discovered that the sinking of the Panay was a direct order had not an accident as they claimed. Japan and Germany were allies during WW2 and this submarine made the long 15,000 mile trip to share military assets and for good will. The I-30 was repaired in France at the Nazi Submarine Pens and after repairs and loaded with special military supplies, the I-30 traveled back to Japan with her precious cargo only to sink in Singapore after refueling.
