This extrem rare Danish Stone Age flint ( silex ) artifact is a halberd ( dagger axe ) with symmetrical point. Belonging to the middle and the later part of the Funnel-Beaker-Culture I, also called Dolmen-Period 4000-3400 bc. Agriculture and animal husbandry were introduced in Denmark c. 4000 BC. Wheat and barley were grown and oxen, sheep, goats and pigs domesticated. Large parts of the land were cultivated during the oldest peasant culture, 4000-2800 BC, and the earliest farmers were energetic builders. They constructed large assembly areas surrounded by moats and palisades like the one found near Sarup on Funen. They also built the oldest stone burial monuments, the dolmens and the passage graves, many thousands of which have been preserved in Denmark. Flint mines were opened and a whole new industry emerged which specialised in the production of elegant, polished flint axes. Large numbers of offerings have been found, including clay pots, flint tools and amber ornaments, and there is evidence of human and animal sacrifices. The first metal was brought into the country from Central Europe in the shape of simple ornaments and flat axe heads made of copper. Dagger-shaped flint halberds which have been mounted at right angles to a haft in the same way as the contemporary flint axes. The examples, often skilfully shaped and sometimes slightly polished at the point, show a broad pointed-oval cross-section, by which they can be distinguished from the late Neolithic daggers. Their distribution covers the whole country and, while the majority are stray finds, specimens have come from settlement sites and in one case from a Dolmen Chamber. They have probably metal prototypes, numerous examples of which, though in general dating from a later period, are known from Western Europe. The possibility can not, however, be dismissed that their ancestry should be sought in the Old Stone Age picks. Provenance is an old Northern European collection. More details will follow this terrific artifact. I guarantee absolutely for the authenticity of this Younger Stone Age weapon.
