MID-LATE 19TH C AMERICAN ANTIQUE HAND FORGED IRON, 2 CURVED TINE EEL SPEAR HEAD . MID-LATE 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN ANTIQUE HAND FORGED, HAMMERED IRON EEL SPEAR HEAD, with 2 CURVED TINES [NO WOODEN SHAFT] (Circa 1870-1885) American mid-late 19th c antique hand forged, hammered primitive cast iron spears & harpoons
- Condition: Good-Very Good overall antique cond: This just discovered mid-late 19th c American, early hand-forged, hammered iron eel spear head, has 2 curved tines & a hand tooled & hand-crafted body, w/the iron being forged by the blacksmith into the rough iron flat & round stock it's presently found. The surface is pock-mocked from age & is slightly oxidized in places. It hasn't been touched & hasn't been repainted, dressed in stove black or otherwise touched. The eel spear is unmistakably hand forged & pounded on an anvil, featuring 2 heavily tooled, splayed arms. The tooling is uneven & clearly hand-rendered. The 2 splayed & curved tines descend & meet the flat iron central, tapered main shaft. The spear remains as found, untouched & undisturbed. A long wooden pole's end would be split & the iron spear slid inside the slot in the wood. This junction would be made strong by tying it tightly w/coarse cord & sealed w/pine tar. A wonderful American primitive artifact. Great form & simplicity.
