Product description :

An unusually beautiful flower, which in many families is grown on windows, is mistakenly called a geranium, but in fact it is a pelargonium. This plant is widely used in indoor gardening and landscape design due to its decorative appearance, unpretentiousness and ability to grow and develop in a variety of conditions.

The confusion with the names – geranium or pelargonium, happened due to the fact that when in the XVII century the famous botanist from Holland Johannes Boorman decided to separate each of these crops into a separate genus, it turned out that another famous scientist of that time Carl Linnaeus had already presented his own classification, in which he combined both of these plants into one category. Pelargonium at that time was widely popular in the arrangement of Victorian gardens and it so happened that people began to call it geranium.

For quite a long time, the plant was considered an exclusively aristocratic flower – noble nobles decorated their homes with it, owners of luxury cottages and villas grew it in their greenhouses. In America and European countries, this plant has been popular for centuries.

This houseplant is a perennial semi-shrub with strong herbaceous and rather fleshy shoots. Depending on the variety, erect and creeping varieties may occur. A characteristic feature of pelargoniums is rapid growth, in just a year the plant can grow by 25-30 cm, on average reaching 60-85 cm in height. The leaves are alternately arranged, petiolate. The outer side of the leaf plate is most often pubescent, but it can be glossy and usually green, although there are varieties with variegated colors. The shape of the petal, as a rule, is rounded, heart-shaped, radial textural veins are clearly visible on its surface.

When creating comfortable living conditions, pelargonium is able to bloom all year round, but this usually happens between April and October. Long peduncles are formed in the axils of the leaves and bear an umbrella spherical inflorescence consisting of a large number of miniature flowers located on shortened pedicels quite close to each other. The petals are painted in snow-white, pinkish and scarlet shades, the corolla consists of 5 petals that differ in size.

The main similarity of pelargonium and geranium is that both cultures belong to the geranium family and therefore they have some external similarity. The seed pods of both plants resemble a crane's beak, the stems of both are in most cases erect. Leaf plates covered with a large number of whitish hairs are arranged alternately. Geranium, like pelargonium, has a sharp and rather specific smell, differs in the brightness of colors and has medicinal properties. Both crops are unpretentious, they are quite simple to grow and easy to propagate.

However, these are different plants, and confirmation of this is the fact that no one has yet managed to cross them with each other – this directly indicates a difference in genetic characteristics. Pelargonium is native to the African savannas. Geranium also comes from warm places, but in the process of its spread around the world, the culture was able to adapt to the most unfavorable climatic conditions, which is why it grows in the wild, and in gardens it can bloom until the first frosts. Pelargonium is a heat–loving houseplant that prefers well-lit areas and does not tolerate drafts, heavy rains and wind gusts.

Geranium flowers of perfectly regular shape include 5, less often 8 petals. In pelargonium, the shape of the petals is symmetrical – the upper pair is visually separated from the lower ones and is larger in size. The first one has flowers collected in a large inflorescence, most varieties of geranium have single flowers. The flowers also differ in the number of stamens – geranium has 10 of them, and pelargonium has no more than 7, the rest are underdeveloped. The color palette of geraniums is the most diverse, but most often it is blue, light blue and purple tones. In pelargoniums, on the contrary, there are no blue tones, most varieties bloom with white, pale pink and red flowers.

Geraniums are grown everywhere in gardens, for this they are planted directly in the open ground. Pelargonium is bred for home floriculture, and although some owners of dachas and private houses take it outside in the summer, nevertheless, it is placed there in a flowerpot or hanging planters, and shortly before the onset of the first frost, the plant is brought back into the house.

Instructions for planting and care:

First of all, it is necessary to pay attention to the fact that geranium seeds should be similar, of high quality, obtained from a healthy plant. Even with good, abundant flowering, geraniums in the room may not give seeds, pollination is absolutely necessary here. To do this, the pots are placed on an open balcony, terrace or just in the garden.

If this is not possible, you can "work as a bee", that is, using a soft brush to transfer pollen from one flower to another. After the end of flowering, a seed capsule will form. When it is fully ripe and withers, the planting material is extracted. You can grow seedlings in the room at any time of the year, but the best planting time is in spring, when daylight begins to increase. In winter, young plants need to be illuminated.

Perennial garden geraniums of different species require spring planting through seedlings or by sowing directly into the ground. The timing of flowering is varied.

Favorable days for sowing are determined by the lunar calendar.

Preparation

Before you start sowing directly, you need to do some preparatory work.

Seed sorting.

Small, flattened, damaged, with unusual color seeds are discarded. Ripe seeds should be quite large, elongated, brown in color, with a dense leathery surface, without spots and damage.

Scarification.

This is scratching the surface of the seed coat with some sharp tool (for example, a file, a nail file, or at least sandpaper). You need to do everything very carefully, remove only the top layer, trying not to damage the seed. This procedure is necessary for faster emergence of sprouts. If it is neglected, shoots may appear only after two or three months.

Preparation of the soil.

You can buy land for planting geraniums in a specialized store, but it is better to prepare it yourself. There is nothing complicated about it. You will need to take two parts of turf soil and one sifted river sand and high-quality peat. Mix everything thoroughly and place in a preheated oven for three to five minutes. You can also spill the soil with hot water with manganese or use modern biofungicides (prepare according to the instructions on the package).

Disinfection of planting material.

Most often, it is advised to use a pink solution of potassium permanganate for seeds, but many prefer to soak them for 15-20 minutes in ordinary hydrogen peroxide or also take fungicides (for indoor plants).

Soaking.

Disinfected seeds are filled with water at room temperature and left for two to three hours to swell.

It is best to plant geranium seeds in flat containers, about 4-5 centimeters high. For this purpose, it is good to prepare transparent food containers with lids.

The container is filled with soil, not reaching the edge of a centimeter and a half, a little rammed by hand, leveled. Then, with a stick or a finger, make small depressions at a distance of 4-5 centimeters from each other. Seeds are placed in the pits and sprinkled with a thin layer of earth. Lightly compacted and moistened with a sprayer.

It is necessary to maintain a constant temperature and humidity of crops, provide air ventilation. To do this, the container is covered with a lid or plastic wrap, in which small holes are pierced.

To make shoots appear sooner, you can use a simple method – germination on toilet paper. Processed, soaked seeds are laid out on a moistened strip of paper, placed in a container with a lid, put in a warm place. As soon as the white shoots hatch, the seeds are carefully planted in the ground, trying not to damage them. Also, for hardening and better growth, crops can be kept in the refrigerator for 7-10 days.

It is convenient to grow geraniums using peat tablets. In this case, the plant will not be injured when transplanted into a larger pot, the root system develops without damage. It is best to buy small-volume tablets. To prepare the tablets for planting, they need to be soaked, for this purpose the products are placed in a wide and deep dish (given that when they swell, they will increase in size by about six times) and filled with warm water

As soon as the peat gets wet, depressions are made in the tablets and seeds are planted, sprinkling them with earth or peat. It should be remembered that it is impossible to keep crops until seedlings appear on the windowsill, especially in the bright sun.

However, the room temperature should not fall below 20-22 degrees.

To get healthy and beautiful plants, you need to grow good seedlings. First, the seeds should be germinated, wait for the emergence of seedlings. After that, the lid is removed from the container and put it in a well-lit warm place. Organize timely watering, as young plants can quickly die from lack of moisture. It can be watered by sprinkling or with a teaspoon under each bush. At the same time, it is necessary to avoid stagnation of water, this leads to rotting and death of seedlings.

Also, the ground must be loosened periodically to ensure air access to the roots. Of course, this should be done very carefully. Fertilizing at such a young age is not necessary for seedlings yet, since there is a necessary supply of nutrients in the soil.

When to dive?

After the young seedlings have two pairs of real, non-cotyledonous leaves, you can start transplanting into separate pots with a diameter of about 10 and a height of 12-15 centimeters.

Picking seedlings is a very important operation. The main thing is not to miss the right moment, and divide the plants until their roots are intertwined. Separate with a fork, a teaspoon or a small spatula for the care of indoor flowers. Before starting work, they are watered abundantly.

At the bottom of each pot, expanded clay (perlite, vermiculite) is laid with a layer of one and a half to two centimeters, for drainage. Then fill with soil for two-thirds of the volume, set the excavated seedling in the middle, and carefully pour the earth to the desired height. Lightly pressed with fingers, compacted. A little watered, along the edge of the pot, so as not to blur the earthen lump.

In the first days, the unpeeled seedlings need shading from direct sunlight. In the future, he feels good in bright lighting, on the southern windows. Properly planted geraniums germinate quickly and look healthy. So that in the future the bushes do not stretch out and delight with an abundance of flowers, as they grow, the tops are pinched.

Separately, it should be said about seedlings of street varieties: seedlings need to be tempered, kept until planting in the ground in a cool, but well-lit place. If possible, it is recommended to transplant it into a nursery or greenhouse.

Although geranium is not a capricious plant, it reproduces well, grows and blooms with minimal care, at first the seedlings require increased attention.

Here are some tips and secrets from experienced flower growers.

Buy seeds from reliable producers, do not get "hooked" by bright, tempting advertising, and do not chase cheapness.

There should not be a lot of mineral substances in the composition of the store soil – this is harmful to geraniums. When making the mixture at home, adhere to the recommended proportions (two parts of the earth and one each of sand and peat).

Disinfect the soil and planting material.

Scarify the seeds to speed up germination.

After sowing, cover the container with a film, strictly observe the temperature regime and monitor humidity. Water carefully, from a spray bottle, try not to overdo it. Be sure to shade the container from direct sun exposure.

As soon as the first shoots appear, remove the film, put the container on the windowsill.

When planting in autumn and winter, provide artificial light, lengthening the daylight hours.

Dive when there are at least two real leaves on the plant.

Plant geraniums in small pots with drainage holes, be sure to put a layer of expanded clay on the bottom.

Pinch the top over 5-6 leaves, so the plant will be more lush.

Harden outdoor varieties of geraniums before planting in the open ground, exposing them to fresh air.

Indoor varieties do not like large pots, and will not begin to bloom until the roots fill the entire earthen lump. Therefore, it is better to transplant them not too often.

Adhering to these simple recommendations, you can grow geraniums from seeds and enjoy the beauty of its flowering all year round.
