The American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion coin of the U.S., and this fractional piece contains 1/10 oz. of .9167 pure gold with the legal tender value of five U.S. dollars. The series was first released in 1986 and has since become an extremely popular bullion piece for stackers and collectors alike!
The design featured on the obverse originally appeared on the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, commissioned by the U.S. President, Theodore Roosevelt in 1907. Lady Liberty is seen holding a torch and branch of olive while a burst of sunlight radiates behind her. This image was meant to echo the style of ancient Roman and Greek coinage.
The reverse is designed by Miley Busiek and depicts a male eagle carrying a branch of olive to his awaiting mate and young in their nest.
This coin has not been graded by any third-party grading company, but was given the designation of GEM Brilliant Uncirculated. Many benefits stem from buying ungraded coins, as you will be spending less for a coin that is likely to fall between the grades of Mint State 65 to 70 and be of equal quality to its graded counterparts. Since the coin is not encapsulated, you can actually hold it in your hand (But please wear gloves)!
