This is the famous old WILD ROSE GOLD Lode Mine / Mining Claim, a 20.66 acre UNpatented Lode mining claim on federal land within the Black Hills National Forest just about 2 miles NE of Custer, South Dakota.  A famous, proven old gold mine.          BLM MLRS Serial # MT105774388.    Paved Hwy 16 from Custer to Sylvan Lake Road; then Great dirt road access from the turnoff from Sylvan Lake Rd to the old main workings and southern 1/2 of claim and within 100 ft of main old workings; the north half of the claim has a forest service gate across the road which keeps most people out except those hiking up the road to see the old Meeker Ranch Homestead.  The WILD ROSE GOLD MINE was previously known as the GRANT Lode (about 1900).  At the time of the report there were adverse claims, meaning that people had claimjumped each other and that there was a valuable deposit there.  From my experience nobody fights over something without value and I always look for these types of claims.  There was an old vertical shaft which is now filled in.  Originally discovered and located prior to 1900; Irregular Quartz fissure vein within intensely distorted Schist and Slates near the Harney Granite. Workings originally consisted of a 200 ft deep vertical shaft with 185 feet of drifting on the 50 ft level, 170 feet of drifting on the 100 ft level, several small stopes, and a winze sunk from the 100 ft level to the 200 ft level. Mid-1900 reports state there were several structures/buildings and a mill. All that remains is a concrete pad and parts of an old wooden cabin.  The shaft has been partially collapsed and/or filled, and the location has been re-located under the mining laws numerous times and is currently under claim (2022).  This claim/mine has a history dating back to the late 1800s and was one of the few productive gold mines in the Custer area, which I believe might have been the lode source for the placer gold found in French Creek in 1874 by the Custer Expedition, as Willow Creek empties into French Creek. I acquired the mine/claim this past summer by relocation.  This vein yielded up to $40 gold per ton when gold was $35- an ounce in 1934 (That would be $773- of gold per ton today!!!)(since gold is worth $53.21 per gram today, that would be about 14.5 grams of gold per ton when in good ore..... NOT BAD!!).  One of the few historic gold claims that you can get your hands on in the Black Hills today, all of the good ground is taken up and I was very lucky to get this one.
